What is Solar Power Plant ?

A solar power plant is a facility that generates electricity by converting energy from the sun into electricity through the use of Solar photovoltaic (PV) cells.

PV cells are made of semiconductor materials that convert sunlight into electricity. They are typically made of silicon and are arranged in panels that can be mounted on rooftops or on the ground.

Solar power plants can be either utility-scale or small-scale. Utility-scale solar power plants are typically large facilities that generate a significant amount of electricity, while small-scale solar power plants are typically used for on-site power generation at homes or businesses.

A solar power plant may be connected to the electric power transmission grid, or it may be used in a standalone application. The electricity generated by a solar power plant is direct current (DC), which is then converted to alternating current (AC) through an inverter before it is sent to the grid or used on-site.

Advantages of solar power plants include being a clean and renewable energy source, having low operating costs, and being easy to install and maintain.

Overall, solar power plants have the potential to be a significant source of clean, renewable energy, and are becoming increasingly cost-effective as technology improves and economies of scale are achieved.

What is Solar On Grid System ?

Solar On Grid system is a system that works on reference voltage alongside the grid. It means it will work only when grid power is available & there are no batteries involved in this system. Solar On Grid System is also known as Solar Grid Connected System or Solar On Grid Rooftop Power Plant.

It means: If grid is available than during day time, solar on grid system will sync with grid & will generate power to run loads connected to the building. In this case, initially the load will run on Solar power and balance on the grid.

Let us understand with an example: Consider a residence with a connected load of 15 KW and a solar power plant of 10 KW.

Case 1: During day time at at point of time, when grid is available, solar is generating 10 KW and running load is 15 KW, it means at that time, import from grid is only for 5 KW.

Case 2: During day time at at point of time, when grid is available, solar is generating 10 KW and running load is 10 KW, it means at that time, import from grid is Nil. Meter is not running.

Case 3: During day time at at point of time, when grid is available, solar is generating 10 KW and running load is 4 KW, it means at that time, import from grid is Nil. In this case, balance excess 6 KW is flowing back to the grid, which can be noted by local electricity department only when net metering is done.

This means that any excess or deficiency of power can be fed to the grid through net metering i.e. bi-directional meter which saves the record for both incoming & outgoing of power.

Today, many residential & industrial users are opting for an On-grid solar system as they get a chance to enjoy credit for the excess power their system produces and save on their electricity bills.

How Solar On Grid System works ?

On-grid solar power plant systems produce power during the daytime. Without a backup power source, this power can either be used instantly or exported to the grid. At any time, the system draws power from the grid if it runs out of power. As a result, the user will never run out of power. Additionally, any excess energy produced by the system is fed into the grid.

With an on-grid system, the user will receive a credit for the extra power he sends to the grid in his electricity bill. As a result, his electricity bills will also be reduced. Before installing an on-grid solar system, always determine your home's energy consumption, solar potential, and solar electricity needs.

The sun's light falls on the solar panels, which generate electricity. Inverters convert DC from the sun into AC, which can then be used by consumers in their homes or businesses. Solar systems operate the same way up to this point. Beyond this point, there is a major difference. After we consume electricity, the extra energy generated can be used in two ways:

1. The solar energy can either be stored in batteries for later use (off-grid solar system) OR

2. Fed to the grid (on-grid solar system).

Key components of Solar On Grid System

1. Solar PV Modules - Solar PV Modules or Solar Panels are the main components of the Solar on-grid solar system. They comprise more than 55% of the total cost of a solar system and are used to capture solar energy and convert solar energy into electrical energy. This form of energy is in the form of DC Power. Everything about Solar Panels.

2. Solar Inverter - Solar Inverters are brain & heart of Solar On grid system. They comprise only 20% of the total cost of a solar system but they play a vital role in system performance. They help in converting the DC power output produced from the solar panel into AC Power. There are different types of Solar Inverter but only Solar On Grid Inverter is used for Solar On Grid Power Plant. There are many key points to be considered while Selection of Solar On Grid Inverter.

3. Solar Module Mounting Structure - Solar Module Mounting structure or Solar PV Panel stands are also a major component of the entire solar system. This stand will support the Solar PV Panels and if the stand is not sturdy than solar panels could just fall resulting in a heavy loss.

It is the skeletal structure holding the panel in the proper position at proper angle. Right angle of inclination on which Solar PV Panels will be installed also result in higher power generation from same Solar On Grid System. These stands are generally made of aluminum or galvanized iron. Aluminum structure is generally used for industrial / tin shed but Galvanized Iron structure is used for RCC / concrete roof or Ground mounted application.

4. Wire & Cable - There are two types of Wire & Cable i.e. AC Cable & Solar DC Cable. For interconnection in between Solar Panels and inverter, DC Cable should be used, whereas for connection in between Inverter to ACDB to LT Panel, AC Cable should be used. Selection of right size & make of Wire & Cable should be done considering long term system life.

5. DCDB & ACDB - DCDBs connect solar panels to inverters, while ACDBs distribute electricity from solar inverters to AC loads via an energy meter. Generally DCDB is required for larger rooftop plants.

6. Earthing Kit - Earthing kits protect on-grid solar systems against thunder.

7. Lighting Arrestor - The Lightning Arrestor protects the on-grid solar system from lightning

8. Net Metering - Net meter is a bi-directional meter, which will be installed in place of existing single phase / three phase LT or HT meter installed at site. Net metering is possible depends upon individual state policy e.g. Haryana is offering Net metering for Solar On Grid System for capacity upto 500 KW and Maharashtra is offering Net metering for Solar On Grid System for capacity upto 1 MW.

Power outages on on-grid solar systems

Every system has benefits as well as certain limitations - an on-grid solar system is no different.

Although its connection with the grid is a sure benefit, it's also a limitation. When there's a power cut from the grid, the on-grid solar system automatically shuts down.

This interruption in the supply of power is known as a power outage. Nevertheless, on-grid solar systems in urban areas with a reliable grid are unbeatable when it comes to meeting all the power requirements of a home.

The main reason that an on-grid solar inverter is designed in a way that it automatically shuts down if the grid fails is to eliminate safety risks. This particular feature that differentiates on-grid inverters from all other types is called Anti-Islanding Protection.

During power outages, an on-grid inverter will stop generating AC power immediately. Otherwise, the electrical maintenance personnel working directly with the wiring at the location of the electrical fault may suffer from electric shocks.

Top Solar Rooftop Installation Companies in India

  • Major obstacles to India's rapid adoption of rooftop solar include a lack of pertinent information and a lack of knowledge of the advantages of going solar. People pay high electricity rates as a result of their discomfort with paying a high upfront price for solar panels and other equipment.

  • The rooftop industry has slowed rapidly due to a lack of standardized products, procedures, and simple financing choices from banks. Rooftop solar panels can now be paid off in 3-5 years because to the sharp decline in solar energy costs (note this depends on many factors like subsidy, electricity bill, tariff, units consumed etc.)

  • According to Mercom, households account for only 9% of the total rooftop solar capacity in the country and a majority of the rooftop installations in the country are on commercial or industrial establishments. However, given the rising demand for power in the country, rooftop solar is the only viable option in India. Let us have a look at the country’s top rooftop solar installers.
